Plasma Nitriding

At Apex Engineering, we offer advanced Plasma Heat Treatment solutions using state-of-the-art RÜBIG MICROPULS® Plasma Technology. Our plasma processes provide exceptional surface engineering with precise control, minimal distortion, and consistent, repeatable results for critical engineering components.

Service Detail

Plasma nitriding, also known as ion nitriding or glow-discharge nitriding, is a state-of-the-art thermochemical case-hardening process. By introducing nitrogen ions into the surface of a metal component within a high-voltage vacuum chamber, we create a highly durable, wear-resistant casing.

Unlike traditional liquid or gas nitriding, the plasma process allows for independent control of temperature and nitrogen potential. This results in precise metallurgical tailoring, zero toxic byproducts, and the lowest possible thermal distortion available in the industry today.

Our Plasma Processes:

  • Plasma Nitriding:  A thermo-chemical diffusion process that enriches the surface with nitrogen to improve hardness, wear resistance, fatigue strength, and component life while maintaining dimensional accuracy.
  • Plasma Nitriding + PLASOX® (Post Oxidation):Combines Plasma Nitriding with an advanced post-oxidation treatment to produce a dense black oxide layer, significantly improving corrosion resistance, reducing friction, and enhancing surface appearance.
  • Plasma Nitrocarburizing: A controlled plasma diffusion process that introduces both nitrogen and carbon into the surface, providing excellent wear resistance, improved sliding properties, reduced friction, and increased fatigue strength.
  • Plasma Nitrocarburizing + PLASOX® : An advanced duplex treatment combining Plasma Nitrocarburizing with PLASOX® post-oxidation for maximum wear resistance, excellent corrosion protection, superior anti-scuffing properties, and an attractive black finish.

Applications

  • Automotive components
  • Aerospace components
  • Wind turbine components
  • Gears and camshafts
  • Plastic moulds and forging dies
  • Precision machined components
  • Textile rollers
  • Cutting tools and blades

Key Process Advantages

Zero Dimensional Distortion

Unlike gas nitriding which requires expensive copper plating, plasma allows for 100% effective masking using simple steel plates or pastes.

Simple Mechanical Masking

Unlike gas nitriding which requires expensive copper plating, plasma allows for 100% effective masking using simple steel plates or pastes.

Superior Hardness

Achieves surface hardness up to 1200 HV depending on the steel alloy, massively increasing lifespan against abrasive friction.

100% Eco-Friendly

Uses only non-toxic process gases (Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Argon), producing zero toxic effluents or salts.

Equipment & Capacity Specifications

  • Max Batch Loading   5000 kg
  • Process Temp Range 400° - 580°C
  • Quality Control  In-House Lab

Common Industrial Applications

Because of its precision, plasma nitriding is heavily utilized in high-stress sectors where components cannot afford dimensional changes after treatment.

  • Automotive & Transport: Transmission gears, camshafts, crankshafts, and drive shafts.
  • Tooling & Moulds: Plastic injection moulds, forging dies, aluminum extrusion tools, and stamping dies.
  • Precision Engineering: Specialized fasteners, hydraulic cylinders, and high-speed cutting tools.
  • Textile Machinery: Rollers, pins, guides, and cams subjected to constant synthetic thread friction.
